Red sky in the morning

Red sky at night, sailor’s delight.
Red sky at morning, sailor take warning.

It’s an interesting adage.  It’s designed to help you guess the weather.  The adage doesn’t work when wild fires run rampant.  Some say that isn’t true because just the right mix of soot and carbon attracts moisture and acts as a base for droplets to form.

How many conversations start about the weather?  Looks like it’s gonna be a real gully washer.  It’s not like we can do anything about the weather, at least not as individuals acting alone.  We’ll sidestep things like global warming or seeding clouds.

We have been cautioned that we are playing with fire.  Really?  They say a storm is coming and we’re directly in its path.  Batten down the hatches and brace for impact.  Full speed ahead.  Warp Factor 8 if you please.  (Had to throw that one in just so you know which one of us is doing the writing.).

With the start of the new year, people have reflected on the past and made resolutions for the present.  Plans for the future have been drawn up and people think about making it through a harsh winter.  Just get past the winter doldrums and everything will be alright.  Yet some people find themselves stuck on the reflections, which may be why we’ve seen some interesting correspondence of late.  Of course, it’s also been four years since a beloved friend passed away after losing the battle with leukemia.  Some in the audience understand and know.

While the group continues, it isn’t the same as when it started.  Yeah, that brings us back to the argument of whether or not it was a cult from the get go.  That horse is beat.  The group also learned from its amateur mistake that cults should not set dates — the mother ship didn’t arrive, the four horsemen of the apocalypse must still be feeding their beasts, Jesus only shows up on toast or potato chips, and the Organization still hasn’t won.

Some would say it has achieved certain victories in the courts.  How old are those victories?  And what about the losses?  One correspondent wrote about the New York 6, which is how the group on the inside refers to the court action that resulted in several members going to jail and lawyers being debarred.  Yes, we had a chuckle about the reference to ambulance chasers trying to beat fraud charges.  Six went to jail and after they got out only three returned to the group.

Why wasn’t it referred to as New York 7?  After all, a seventh ended up in jail.  You have to remember that it was a complex situation — perhaps too complex.  Oldie was notorious for the complex.  You didn’t just walk down the end of the hallway to get the piece of cheese.  There were twists and turns, dead ends, oubliettes, overpasses, clover passes, underground passages, etc.

Some people are still trying to process the events they experienced.  One former member didn’t leave because of the politics.  She received a modest trust fund as inheritance and an uncle interceded on her behalf when strange checks were cashed.  When funds were frozen, she was allowed to visit the uncle to work to get the funds unfrozen.  A few days turned into a few weeks and ultimately resulted in another lawsuit concerning fraud charges.  She even testified in court that she would have given them the money if they had just asked.  They chose to steal.  It’s a far cry from the stories of robbing banks in the beginning to finance the operation (which some people claim are just bed time stories to tell new cadre).

We might not know the magic words to tell you that will make you feel better.  We will do our best to help you understand based on past experiences.  It’s been real and surreal.  We are not detectives so if you need one you have to hire one.  We do not kidnap people.  We just talk a bunch of crap that some people agree with and others disagree.  That’s okay.  We can dialog all you want or you can cut your losses and move on to talk to someone else.

For those of you who were in it to win it, recovery doesn’t just happen.  It takes time.  As much time as it takes.  Good luck.

PS The nuns will always pray for you.
